The Mike Varley Plain Dealer: “To the Basic Cable Faithful,” A Rally to Restore Sanity Response

November 21st, 2010 by admin

Hello all,

I’m pleased to debut today “To the Basic Cable Faithful,” a video-essay chronicling the events of the John Stewart/Stephen Colbert “Rally to Restore Sanity” that took place Saturday, October 30th on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  The piece is a collaboration between myself and architect/filmmaker Mickey Benson, with important contributions from filmmaker Darin Quan.  I wrote and narrated the piece, Mickey shot the bulk of the footage, and together we shaped the images.  Darin provided the shots of me handing out “The Events of Election ’08” flyers and I provided the intro audio from a conversation on the van ride home.  None of the work was pre-planned, nor was the intention to collaborate.  Go to vimeo’s site for the full HD version.

I’m very excited about the piece, as I’ve yet to see any work that documents the event in quite this fashion.  I hope you enjoy.
