The Mike Varley Plain Dealer, Volume III, Issue III
September 5th, 2009 by adminHey all,
Welcome to another edition of the Mike Varley Plain Dealer: All the News That’s Fit to Spit. For those of you new to the email list, this is a quarterly update letter detailing my artistic triumphs and personal travails. Or artistic travails and personal triumphs. It really depends on the season.
This update I’ve got some positive gains to report on both sides of the ledger. First is my wonderful trip to California, which you can read about on my website here. This was the high point of my summer, but I’ve had a good one overall. The one bad part was having Erin up in Syracuse all summer with time off from teaching, but I kept myself busy learning more piano, studying for the tour guide position and working on the movie. Other highlights included a trip up to Syracuse for Bessie and Steve’s wedding and a visit from my sister Maura and her family from Virginia.
I talked about the tour guide position on my last email. I thought I was going to take the tour guide test in August, but there’s too much information for me to feel comfortable taking the test. I might be able to pass it now, but I want to do really good. The tentative plan is to take the test at the end of September, but we’ll see. I did the first round of interviews for a position at YHI last week but I haven’t heard from them yet. In the meantime, I’ve been making NYC: Ten Points of Interest posts on my website. You can check one out here.
Music obsessions for the summer were mostly me catching up on old stuff. I enjoyed the albums I mentioned last email – Busdriver, Jeffrey Lewis and Pheonix – but nothing were earth shattering. If I had to pick the best, I’d say Busdriver. I listened to LCD Soundsystem’s “Sound of Silver” and “Magical Mystery Tour” very heavily, and both were great experiences.
–On the Artistic side, I’ve posted a trailer on my website for “Bruce and Dom: Transcripts from a Burgeoning Relationship.” Check it out!!
–Also, be on the lookout for September 19th. I’m not going to tell you what’s going to happen then, but expect an email from me with an awesome story.
–My website has undergone some functional and cosmetic improvements. The biggest change is the ability to buy “Events of Election ’08” CD’s through PayPal. check it out here.
