It is difficult to imagine  Aristotle or Caillois celebrating <em>Farmville<\/em> as essential to  citizenship.  Indeed, when one measures <em>Farmville<\/em> against Roger  Caillois\u2019 six criteria for defining games, <em>Farmville<\/em> fails to  satisfy each and every one.  Caillois stated that games must be <strong>free<\/strong> from obligation, <strong>separate<\/strong> from \u2018real life,\u2019 <strong>uncertain<\/strong> in outcome, an <strong>unproductive<\/strong> activity, <strong>governed  by rules<\/strong>, and <strong>make-believe<\/strong>.[12]   In\u00a0comparison:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <em>Farmville<\/em> is defined by obligation, routine, and  responsibility;<br \/>\n(2) <em>Farmville<\/em> encroaches and depends upon real life, and is  never entirely separate from it;<br \/>\n(3) <em>Farmville<\/em> is always certain in outcome, and involves  neither chance nor skill;<br \/>\n(4) <em>Farmville<\/em> is a productive activity, in that it adds to the  social capital upon which Facebook and Zynga depend for their wealth;<br \/>\n(5) <em>Farmville<\/em> is governed not by rules, but by habits, and  simple cause-and-effect;<br \/>\n(6) <em>Farmville<\/em> is not make-believe, in that it requires neither  immersion nor suspension of\u00a0disbelief.<\/p>\n\t\t<div style=\"float:right;margin:10px 10px 0px 0px;\">\r\n\t\t\t<a class=\"DiggThisButton DiggCompact\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmikevarley.com%2F%3Fp%3D542&title=The+Week+is+Link%3A+The+Future+and+Farmville\" ><span style=\"display:none\">An article dealing with the allure of the facebook phenomenon.\u00a0 From the article: One wonders if this is a good thing.
