{"id":397,"date":"2009-10-09T12:30:28","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T20:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikevarley.com\/?p=397"},"modified":"2009-10-04T19:09:02","modified_gmt":"2009-10-05T03:09:02","slug":"the-week-is-link-celebritiesfanscom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikevarley.com\/?p=397","title":{"rendered":"The Week is Link: CelebritiesFans.Com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever want to write a letter to a celebrity?\u00a0 www.celebritiesfans.com is your place to find their addresses.\u00a0 My letter to Bob Dylan after the jump.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 1964, a then-burgeoning Bob Dylan took a road trip to New Orleans.\u00a0 On the way, he stopped in North Carolina to visit the home of poet Carl Sandberg.\u00a0 The two talked on his porch for a few minutes, but Sandberg soon excused himself, much to Dylan&#8217;s disappointment.\u00a0 My letter to Bob Dylan:<\/p>\n<p>Dear Carl Sandberg,<\/p>\n<p>My name is Bob Dylan; I&#8217;m an artist livin&#8217; in New York right now.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll spare us the indignities of praising your virtues and get right to the heart of it.<\/p>\n<p>Are there any trees in your yard that don&#8217;t thrill like they used to?\u00a0 Does their springtime seem vacant, their autumn a chore?\u00a0 I had to chop down a Blossoming Cherry today and it couldn&#8217;t wait one petal longer.\u00a0 Knife-carved branches that once seemed immortal rested underfoot, and the neighbors helped me bundle the loss.\u00a0 A new self costs a mess of petals; I sat down to write you this letter.<\/p>\n<p>The television&#8217;s running; I haven&#8217;t the nerve to turn off the news.\u00a0 I wish we could go back to the old days of media with mad-suspendered newspapermen barking out marching orders to the world.\u00a0 It was romantic, purpose-driven, and nobly ignorant.\u00a0 And best of all, you could ignore it if you wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think you or I have any special gifts, Carl, despite what they claim.\u00a0 I just think that&#8217;s something people say to avoid exploring their own humanity.\u00a0 We keep writing regardless to feel the god within us: &#8220;enthusiasm&#8221; to the Greeks, to me agnostic witness.<\/p>\n<p>Did you follow the election, Carl?\u00a0 I like this man we have now &#8211; his dreams aren&#8217;t hollowed out yet.\u00a0 The enclosed orations speak more of this.\u00a0 These times are meant for artists and entrepreneurs, the crossroads of which is your porch.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to sit there sometime and stare at your Cottonwood Poplars.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be sure to bring the Knob Creek; whether we have glasses is up to you.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely yours,<br \/>\nBob Dylan<\/p>\n\t\t<div style=\"float:right;margin:10px 10px 0px 0px;\">\r\n\t\t\t<a class=\"DiggThisButton DiggCompact\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmikevarley.com%2F%3Fp%3D397&title=The+Week+is+Link%3A+CelebritiesFans.Com\" ><span style=\"display:none\">Ever want to write a letter to a celebrity?\u00a0 www.celebritiesfans.com is your place to find their addresses.\u00a0 My letter to Bob Dylan after the jump.<\/span><\/a>\t\t\r\n\t\t<\/div>\t\t\r\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever want to write a letter to a celebrity?\u00a0 www.celebritiesfans.com is your place to find their addresses.\u00a0 My letter to Bob Dylan after the jump.
